Who asks for your certificate in English — and in what format
No U.S. agency accepts a document in Portuguese without a translation. And almost all of them want more than the translated text: they want a signed statement that the translation is complete and faithful to the original.
USCIS — green card and citizenship
I-130, I-485, I-751 and N-400 petitions require your birth certificate and, where applicable, your marriage certificate or divorce record. 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3) calls for a full English translation together with a certificate of translation accuracy.
Social Security and the courts
To apply for an SSN, correct a name, or file family and probate matters in NJ and NY courts, the translated certificate is what proves parentage, marital status and date of birth.
Schools, insurers and registries
Enrolling children in public school, adding dependents to a health plan and inheritance proceedings routinely require a translated certificate — and, in some cases, an apostille as well.

Frequently asked questions
Does a certificate translation have to be sworn in the U.S.?
The United States has no sworn translator system like Brazil's. What USCIS requires is a complete translation accompanied by the translator's signed statement attesting to accuracy and competence — which is exactly what we deliver.
Do I have to mail the original certificate?
No. We work from a legible photo or scan. The original stays with you, to present alongside the translation whenever the agency asks for it.
My certificate is old and typewritten. Can you still translate it?
Yes. Old, handwritten and typewritten certificates are part of our daily work. If any passage is unreadable in the photo, we tell you before starting and agree on how to handle it.
Are translation and apostille the same thing?
No. A translation converts the content into English; an apostille is a seal authenticating the document's origin for international use. Some processes require both — if that's your case, we handle both steps in one order.
